Field broom grass (Poa pratensis) is a plant from the grass family (Poaceae) that is widely used for sowing lawn and sports fields. It is also used in grass mixtures for feed purposes, but is much more important for this purpose in Germany than in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the species is outcompeted by perennial ryegrass in meadows. The number of chromosomes per plant varies from 2n = 28 to more than 100. Meadow broom grass is therefore a clonal species, which propagates mainly by seed through apomixia and vegetatively through underground shoots (rhizomes). Some varieties from the Scandinavian countries have a winter dormancy, during which the above-ground leaves die.
